Maritime Surveillance encompasses sectors such as sea border surveillance, traffic safety, environmental protection, fisheries control as well as search-and-rescue operations.
The advances made in the last years on the efficiency and effectiveness of maritime surveillance, developing and integrating technologies for target (vessel) detection and identification, such as exploiting the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar), the AIS (Automatic Identification System) and the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), have a significant draw-back, degrading its operational value, due to its long response time. The long response time is mostly due to the compute intensive processing which is required.
The use of the EVOLVE testbed will allow to use more sophisticated (and resource-demanding) algorithms for more accurate detection and identification while reducing response-time, resulting in better quality of service and also larger area coverage, both of extreme value in real-life deployments.
